Four Autumn Styling Shortcuts

Dappled sunlight, cascading leaves, and a lingering chill in the morning air can only mean one thing, autumn is almost upon us. As the season shifts and long summer days give way to early nights, we begin to turn inward towards warmth, comfort, and more time spent at home. The lure of a new season always inspires us to breathe new life into our interiors to ensure our homes are a soothing sanctuary to retreat to over the chilly months ahead.

From rich textures, comforting scents and connecting with nature we’ve delved into the current trends enticing us into the cosier months ahead and created four styling shortcuts to allow you to curate the perfect atmosphere for this transitional season and experiment with how best to welcome autumn into your home.

Bring the outside in

With our homes becoming a permanent hybrid between working and living as of late, we have come to appreciate the power of nature and Biophilic design to uplift and revitalise us. “Colour-wise we are throwing open the doors and windows and inviting every shade of nature in for tea” Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director of Dulux. It’s the perfect time of year to take inspiration of the beauty of autumn and echo the changing landscapes in our homes. 'Dried florals are the perfect decor for getting in the fall spirit’ Lance Thomas, founder of Thomas Guy Interiors. Our Autumn 2022 Collection perfectly sets the tone with sumptuous shades of burgundy, opulent jewel shades and rich earthy browns. Our Fleur Bouquet brings the ultimate visual warmth featuring our statement ruby red proteas, perfectly paired with all the pretty pinks, burgundy eucalyptus, soft pampas and beautiful scabiosa flowers for the perfect autumnal update to your interiors. Whilst our Cora Bouquet lends itself to a contemporary and naturally wild aesthetic, with organic textures in a soft and neutral palette punctuated with pops of red and burgundy.

Fall for pretty pinks

In addition to the ever-popular warm tones for autumn, a recent study into consumer trends highlighted the transformative effect a pastel colour palette can have on our moods, evoking feelings of joy and happiness. 'It's no surprise to us that we're all lusting for colour as homeowners steer away from grey, but we are amazed at the consumer response to the connection between colour and wellbeing' says Lizzie Beesley, Head of Design at Magnet. Pretty pinks emerged as the colour of choice to invoke a sense of wellness and calm and as such is a key element in our Mara Bouquet. Sticking to earthy hues to reflect the season, Mara includes gorgeous pops of soft pink rice flower, pretty pink banksia dryandra combined with soft neutral textures and foliage in green & rust. Whilst preserved flowers are a simple and sustainable way update your interiors, welcoming in this season’s hues can be as simple as adding a cosy throw, cushions, and accessories in rosy pinks. Or, if you want to really go for it, dip your paint rollers in warm dusty pink tones to give new life to your space. One of our personal favourites is Farrow and Ball Sulking Room Pink, a romantic muted rose.

Welcoming ambience

As the clocks fall back and shorter days are creeping in, a simple switch of harsh overhead lighting in favour of ambient lighting from lamps, wall lights and fairy lights is the perfect way to create a warming autumnal atmosphere. “Go for a combination of accent and task lighting, using a mix of floor, table, and pendant to impact the mood of a room” Angela Murray of Hadeland Glassverk. Softer lighting is perfectly complemented by the flicker of a real flame, and we don’t think there is a more fitting time for candles than autumn! Scent your home for the season with deliciously rich notes of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg, Perfect for adding a soothing and cosy vibe to your interiors. Some of our personal favourites are Diptyque Wood Fire and The White Company Fireside Candle with soft smoked woods, birch and creamy vanilla.

Layer up

A simple and easy way to give your interiors a refresh is to switch out your soft furnishings and introduce luxurious materials, patterns and colours that lend themselves to the chillier season. Switching out summer’s light and airy fabrics in favour of thicker textures such as chenille and wool is a must as the weather turns crisp. A key tip to add a sense of luxe and warmth is to layer up your textures & colours, from chunky cable knit throws to cashmere blankets in chocolate brown, camel and caramel tones. Adorn your sofas, beds and armchairs with all the inviting finishes that envelopes you in cosiness, ready for snuggling up with a hot chocolate & good book after a long day. Or add a plush living room rug underfoot in a warm block colour or pattern to add personality to your space. Turning your home into a cocooning haven’s will serve as the perfect form of escapism and luxury from the workplace and chaos of the outside world.
